RIDE: Filling the Gap in Senior Transportation Needs

Janice was living in senior living apartments and on a tight budget. She had vital doctor appointments coming up, but she didn’t have a car anymore and was struggling to find reliable and affordable transportation…until she learned about the JFS RIDE (Reliable Independent Drivers for the Elderly) Program.

Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando (JFS Orlando)’s RIDE Program is a one-of-a-kind service that arranges round-trip rides to medical, grocery, and other essential appointments for qualifying, low-income seniors or disabled adults. Transportation is door-to-door and scheduled at the client’s convenience by a licensed and insured service. Program participants are entitled to two free roundtrip rides per month within a ten-mile radius of their residence.

Not only does this service address the gap in senior transportation needs in our community, but it increases independence, promotes well-being, and improves access to healthcare. “It was a gift from the heavens. It saved our lives!” shared Janice.

Last year, JFS Orlando arranged 755 rides through the RIDE Program. However, the need is even greater. Currently, due to the success of the program, the 67-person waitlist is closed to new clients. The demand has never been clearer, and the RIDE Program has proven to be a unique opportunity to meet this need.
